Meditating Scripture Can Change Your Life!
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer (Psalm 19:14).
The Hebrew word for meditation here means to meditate, mutter, roar, speak, study, talk, or to utter. The Hebrew word gives reference to a murmuring sound. When we’re deep in thought we sometimes speak under our breath aloud. That’s the idea of meditating here. Take specific scripture and let them revolve over and over in your thoughts. That is meditation.
The Father wants us to think and ponder things that will cause us to flow with His purposes. He wants to bless us BIG. The words be acceptable in the above text in the Hebrew means to delight or to satisfy. It delights the Father when our inward meditations agree with Him! And here’s why.
We are already blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). All things that pertain to life and godliness already belong to us by faith. That is, all things necessary to sustain us both spiritually and materially have already been provided! (2 Peter 1:3-4). When our meditations, our self talk (the things that we really believe that make us what we are), agree with the Father, it delights Him because we receive in life exactly what we believe! And when we agree with Him it gives Him permission to bless us.
All lack of agreement with the Father produces unmet need. He wants to help us in every area of life, but He’s hindered when we fail to agree with Him internally. And meditation takes the Word of God and drops it down into your spirit nature, down into your personal belief system. And when the Word of God gets into your personal belief system, your life will change!
Proverbs tells us to keep our hearts with all diligence, because the things that we have in life flow out of it (Proverbs 4:23). We receive in life exactly what we believe in our hearts about ourselves (our inward thoughts, our self-talk). Jesus said all things are possible to him who believes. He said as you have believed, so be it done to you, and He said according to your faith let it be done to you (Mark 9:23; Matthew 8:13; Matthew 9:29).
When our inward belief system agrees with the Father, the impossible becomes possible, the limits are removed, and we change! Our needs are met, the chains are removed, and we grow into the person we were created to be when we choose to meditate and think on the word of God!
I began to meditate the word when I was in my late teens. I had a very low opinion of myself at that time. I felt isolated, alone. Fear ruled most of my thoughts. Fear of a thousand things. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of dying young without ever really living. Fear of never getting married. Fear of disease. Fear of what others thought about me. On and on I could go.
I stumbled upon meditation as a way to keep my thoughts in check. I found my mind going back and rehearsing my past life over and over and I was looking for a way to keep it from going there. I tried to pray bad thoughts away, but it didn’t work. I tried to praise bad thoughts away, but it didn’t work. What I did find was that if I placed one scripture in my mind and let it roll over and over again, then I could keep my thoughts from going back into my past and driving me down.
So while I worked in a grocery store stocking shelves, I kept a scripture rolling over and over in my mind. Eventually, I filled two three by five index cards full of scriptures just as small as I could write. I would then take them every single day, go to a private place, walk back and forth and say each scripture over and over out loud. That is a form of meditation.
To begin with, it seemed like it wasn’t affecting how I lived very much, with the exception that I was able to at least control my thoughts. But, after a few months, I found that I began to change. The fears began to diminish. When challenging days came and I was tempted to think about all the wrong things, I found my heart reminding me of what God’s Word said about me. I began to be in control from the inside out! And that’s when I began to see the power in meditating the Word. Now, all these years later, I am not the same person I was at all. The Word took me over from inside!
Begin today to make His Word your meditation. Take a scripture each day and when you have some idle mental time, let it revolve over and over in your mind. I have been meditating this way for many years now. Meditation has transformed my whole life. It has removed false beliefs that I had about myself, others, and God. Life has been richer and fuller, and Jesus and the things of God have moved to the forefront of my life because of personal meditation.
If you will take ten or fifteen minutes every day to meditate, you will be challenged by the Father to change wrong beliefs, and your life and circumstances will slowly change from the inside out. You will be transformed! Start meditating today!
